'The Art of Reading' workshop

  • Battery Point Community Hall 52 Hampden Road Battery Point, TAS, 7004 Australia (map)

Damon Young explores the virtues of reading, and celebrates the adventure of the written word.

We are not born readers, we learn to turn words into worlds. But why is fine writing lauded while excellent reading is ignored?

In his book The Art of Reading, philosopher Damon Young reveals the pleasures of this intimate pursuit through a rich sample of literature: from Virginia Woolf's diaries to Batman comics.

In this brief workshop, participants are introduced to the basic ideas of The Art of Reading, including the classical concept of virtue: what it is, and how it works in literature. In a stimulating but casual atmosphere, they’re encouraged to reflect on their own reading virtues and vices. When do they speed up or slow down? What genres or styles do they seek or ignore? And why? Participants will read two suggestive texts, and discuss their responses with the class. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a better sense of their own literary interests, and how to enhance and enrich them.

The workshop will be limited to 10 attendees and we are currently taking bookings.

Workshop participation is $50, or $40 for concession.
